Grace Altenhofen
Communications Coordinator
Grace Altenhofen’s background in communications was driven by a sense of curiosity and desire to amplify underrepresented voices. These are skills she puts into practice every day as a communications coordinator at Horizon Group.
Grace’s love of words flourished while in college and she served as editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, leading her team to the 2023 Student Organization of the Year award and earning second place in the Iowa College Media Association’s Best Media Website. She was an active member of Drake’s Board of Student Communications, and she interned at the Society of Professional Journalists and the Des Moines Register before deciding to pursue a communications career outside of journalism.
At Horizon Group, Grace works with a variety of nonprofit clients on their programming and publications. She also assists clients with research projects, from focus group recruitment to report writing and editing. Her penchant for words has made her a leader in Horizon Group’s digital marketing and communications efforts.
Grace lives in West Des Moines with her partner, Kameron, and her Garfield-like orange cat, Sammy. In her free time, Grace can be found reading, tending to her dozens of houseplants, or playing guitar.

Favorite place in Iowa
My favorite place in Iowa is McGregor, a beautiful town that I remember fondly from childhood vacations.
When I was 6, I wanted to be…
When given the prompt “What would you do with a million dollars?”, I told my kindergarten teacher I wanted to buy the Wienermobile, convert it to a rescue-mobile and drive around the country picking up stray cats. Honestly, 6-year-old me had the right idea.
